Common Reasons for MOT Failure

A vehicle can fail its MOT for a variety of safety, emissions, or structural issues. Common failure points include:

Boot / Tailgate

Inspect the boot or tailgate for secure opening and closing. Ensure hinges, latches, and locks are intact for proper safety.

Vehicle Structure

Check overall bodywork and structure for rust, cracks, or damage. Confirm it remains strong and safe for proper performance.

Seatbelts / SRS

Inspect seatbelts for wear and damage. Confirm airbags and safety restraint systems are fully functional for driver and passenger protection

Suspension

Examine suspension components for wear or damage. Ensure they absorb shocks properly, providing a smooth and stable ride.

Wipers / Washers

Check wipers and washers for correct operation. Ensure they clean the windscreen effectively to maintain visibility in all weather.

Windscreen

Inspect the windscreen for any cracks, chips, or damage that could impair the driver's vision. The windshield should be clean and free from obstructions.

Wiring & Battery

Examine the vehicle's electrical wiring for any signs of damage, fraying, or wear. The battery should be secure, with no corrosion on the terminals.

Exhaust Emissions

Inspect the exhaust system for leaks and proper function. Ensure emissions meet environmental standards and reduce harmful gases.

Steering

Check the steering system for responsiveness and smooth operation. Ensure there is no excessive play, guaranteeing safe and controlled driving.

Doors

Inspect all doors for secure locking and smooth operation. Ensure seals, hinges, and mechanisms prevent leaks and maintain safety.

Mirrors

Ensure all mirrors are secure, adjustable, and free from damage. They should provide a clear, unobstructed view for safe driving.

Horn

The horn should work effectively, producing a clear, audible sound. It is essential for alerting other drivers of your presence in emergencies.

Your Rights After MOT Failure

If your car fails its MOT, here’s what you should know:

  • Right to repair elsewhere: You are free to repair your vehicle at Autoveto or any other garage of your choice.
  • No obligation to stay: You are not obliged to leave your vehicle with the test centre that performed the test.
  • Free partial retest window: In many cases, if you have the failed items repaired and return within a specified period (commonly 10 working days), a partial retest of those repaired items is free of charge (see Autoveto’s policy below).
  • Full retest if many items fail: If the failure is broad and affects many systems, a full retest may be required, and a full retest fee applies.
  • Right to ask for explanations: You can ask the tester to explain exactly what failed and why, in a clear and understandable manner.

Our Retest Policy

  • The 10 working days free partial retest window begins from the date the MOT was first conducted.
  • Only the repaired failed items are retested during a partial retest, other systems that have not failed will not be retested during that window.
  • If any new faults unrelated to the original failures have arisen, they will be noted, and you may need further work or a full test.
  • Should you choose to make repairs elsewhere and return to Autoveto for a retest, we will retest the repaired items free of charge (within the window), provided they are presented correctly and safely.

How to Arrange Repairs & Retest at Autoveto

  1. Receive your MOT failure report: After inspection, the tester will hand you a VT30 failure certificate detailing failed items and advisories.

  2. Organise repairs: You can repair the vehicle with us or at any other workshop.

  3. Book a retest slot: Contact Autoveto to schedule a retest, ideally within the 10 working days to qualify for free partial retest.

  4. Return for retest: Bring your vehicle back; our team will retest the repaired items or perform a full MOT if needed.

Get your pass & certificate: Once your vehicle passes, we’ll issue the VT20 pass certificate and you’ll be road-legal again.

Tips to Avoid an MOT Failure

To minimise the risk of failing your MOT and facing delays or costs, follow these proactive tips:

  • Regular checks before MOT day: Check lights, tyres, wiper blades, and indicators a few weeks beforehand.

  • Keep wheels and tyres healthy: Ensure tyre pressure, tread depth, and correct inflation are up to standard.

  • Use quality bulbs and spares: Keep a spare set of bulbs and check all lights are working.

  • Maintain brakes and fluids: Frequent checks and servicing of your braking system can prevent many failures.

  • Monitor the exhaust system: Be aware of unusual noise or emissions, early diagnosis can save big issues.

  • Avoid corrosion build-up: Especially in rust-prone areas or older vehicles; treat rust spots early.

  • Don’t ignore advisory comments: If your last MOT had advisories, act on them before they become failures.

FAQS

Yes, unless the vehicle is deemed dangerous by the tester, you are allowed to drive to a repair workshop or return for retest. Always ensure it’s safe and legal to do so.

A partial retest (only checking repaired items) often takes 10–20 minutes. A full retest can take as long as a regular MOT.

New faults not associated with the original failure may need additional work and might count toward a full retest.

Only if a full retest is required. If you return within our 10-day window for partial retest, that portion is free (for the repaired items).

Yes, you are free to choose where to repair your vehicle. Just return to Autoveto within the retest window if you want free partial retest for repaired items.
