When Does Your Vehicle Need Its First MOT?

In Great Britain, most vehicles need their first MOT by the third anniversary of their registration date. After that, the test is required every year. Northern Ireland follows a four-year rule for most vehicles. Some vehicles – like classic cars over 40 years old – are fully exempt.

After that first test, your vehicle must pass an MOT every year without exception.

How Do You Know Exactly When Your First MOT Is Due?

Check your V5C for the date your vehicle was first registered. That date, plus three years, is your deadline.

You can also use the free MOT history checker on GOV.UK. Enter your registration number and it will show your MOT expiry date and full test history.

If your car was registered in Northern Ireland, the rules differ slightly – your first MOT is due after four years, not three.

Are There Vehicles That Don’t Need an MOT?

Yes. Some vehicles are exempt entirely. Others follow a shorter testing schedule.

Exempt vehicles include:

  • Classic cars over 40 years old that have not undergone substantial changes in the last 30 years – owners must declare this exemption using Form V112 when taxing the vehicle
  • Agricultural tractors
  • Some electric goods vehicles first registered before March 2015

Vehicles tested after just one year include:

  • Taxis and private hire vehicles
  • Ambulances
  • Private passenger vehicles with more than 16 seats

If you’re unsure which category your vehicle falls into, check the GOV.UK MOT exemptions guidance or contact us directly.

What Happens If You Drive Without a Valid MOT?

Driving without a valid MOT is illegal. The consequences are serious.

  • A fine of up to £1,000 for a standard offence
  • A fine of up to £2,500, plus possible penalty points or a driving ban, if your vehicle was previously declared dangerous
  • Your car insurance is likely invalidated – which could have catastrophic financial consequences if you’re involved in an accident

There are two narrow exceptions: you can drive to a pre-booked MOT test, or to a garage for repairs needed to pass the test. Outside of those two situations, you must not drive an unregistered vehicle on public roads.

Can You Book Your First MOT Early?

Yes – and we recommend it. You can book your MOT up to one month (minus one day) before your due date. Your certificate will still run for 12 months from the original anniversary date, so you don’t lose any time on your MOT.

Booking early gives you time to address any issues without scrambling at the last minute.

What Does an MOT Actually Check?

An MOT (Ministry of Transport test) assesses whether your vehicle meets the minimum road safety and environmental standards set by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).

The test covers around 20 components, including:

  • Lights and signals – the most common reason for failure, accounting for 19% of fails (DVSA)
  • Steering and suspension (13% of failures)
  • Brakes (10% of failures)
  • Tyres – a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm is required (8% of failures)
  • Windscreen, wipers, and driver visibility
  • Exhaust and emissions
  • Seatbelts, horn, number plates, and body structure

The MOT does not check the condition of your engine, clutch, or gearbox. Those components are assessed during a vehicle service – a separate process. Passing an MOT confirms your car is road-legal; it does not confirm your car is mechanically healthy.

Don’t Miss Your First MOT Date

Missing your first MOT date is an avoidable risk. Check your V5C today, confirm your registration date, and count forward three years. If you’re approaching that date, book your test now – ideally within the one-month early booking window.

At AutoVeto MOT, we carry out tests at our approved test centre and give you a clear, itemised breakdown of every result. If your vehicle needs attention before the test, we’ll tell you exactly what to fix and why.
